The Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme, recently introduced by the Tamil Nadu government, aims to benefit nearly 1 million women through the State Government’s Universal Basic Income Program. With a budget of Rs. 7000 Crore, the scheme will provide a monthly assistance of Rs. 1000 to eligible beneficiaries. Registration for the scheme, both online and offline, will commence on September 15, 2023, which marks the birth anniversary of the late Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

Over the past three days, since Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially initiated the distribution of applications in the Dharmapuri district on July 24, Tamil Nadu has received a total of 36 lakh applications for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme. As of Wednesday at 6 p.m., approximately 36,06,974 applications have been received, and the registration process has been supported by 34,350 volunteers.

For the second phase of registration, which is scheduled to take place between August 5 and August 16, around 14,825 ration shop registration camps will be organized. Prior to the commencement of these camps, applications and tokens will be distributed.

In a virtual conference on Wednesday, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena chaired a meeting with all District Collectors from the Secretariat to evaluate the implementation of the program.

The Greater Chennai Corporation, as per Corporation Commissioner Dr. J. Radhakrishnan’s announcement, will conduct camps in two phases for the implementation of the monthly assistance program for women known as Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam. The first phase will run from July 24 to August 4, covering 98 wards, while the second phase will take place from August 5 to August 16, encompassing 102 wards. The Tamil Nadu government will officially launch the program on September 15.

As part of the process, PDS shop employees will visit homes and distribute application papers and tokens containing details about the camp dates and locations. Dr. Radhakrishnan advised applicants not to rush to the camps, and he mentioned that the police have received training for collecting biometric data.

The camp timings will be from 9.30 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5.30 pm, including Sundays. Applicants need to carry their Aadhaar card, ration card, power bill, and bank passbook along with them. The help desks near the camps will be staffed by 703 personnel, and an additional 2,607 volunteers will assist the personnel. In total, 3,473 individuals, including government employees and volunteers, will be involved to ensure the smooth functioning of the camps. Dr. Radhakrishnan highlighted that all PDS employees are undergoing training to ensure efficient operations.
